Antique Salt Glazed Stoneware Baskets

A collection of antique stoneware dipping baskets once used by plating factories to contain tarnished metal articles as they were submerged in acids in order to be stripped. Designed to be completely acid-proof, each is a unique work of incidental art pottery, most decorated with a rich salt glaze, rendering their textures similar to early American stoneware. Inherently modern in form and varying in scale, shape, color, and perforation size, they bear clear evidence of their American manufacturing history – – variegated surfaces, small blemishes, assorted traces of wear and use, and firing imperfections. With the arrival of new materials, these beautiful-but-cumbersome-and-easily-broken vessels were by and large destroyed. Pure wabi-sabi sculptures that are especially impressive and scarce as a large group. Circa 1910-1920.

Sizes vary.
