Renato Bassoli Ceramic Sassi Vases
A pair of glazed earthenware Sassi (stones) sculptures in shades of Mediterranean blue and sea foam green by Renato Bassoli (1915-1982). Bassoli was a multi-disciplined artist with earlier career credits in both graphic and set design before moving on to sculpture, jewelry, furniture, and ceramics. The Sassi series, arguably that for which he’s most instantly recognized, was first exhibited in 1959 at Il Sestante Gallery in Milan, and most recently in 2015 at the Triennale Design Museum. The simple yet compelling forms have scattered piercings — a striking parallel to the Concetto Spaziale ceramics of Lucio Fontana — and the glazes Bassoli used were from the celebrated French pottery region of Vallauris. Signed to the underside as shown. Priced as a pair.
Blue: 2 h x 4.5 w x 4 d
Green: 2 h x 3.75 w x 1.75 d
Condition: good, age appropriate wear
